Obituary for Arkadi Vakhnovetski

Arkadi Vakhnovetski passed on Thursday, January 6, 2022, after a five-year battle with lymphoma. He was 67.

He was born on May 5, 1954 in Angarsk, Russia to Mikhail and Lucia Vakhnovetski. Arkadi had a unique childhood in several remote cities in the Far North of Russia. He explored nature on numerous long range camping trips, perfected his skiing, and fed his natural curiosity with a deep love for reading, history, and understanding how all things work. He graduated from the Moscow State University of Civil Engineering, where he met his beloved wife Julia.

In pursuit of a better life for his family, Arkadi arrived in New York with $200 in his pocket. Defining the American dream, he worked incredibly hard in a variety of jobs eventually finding a deep interest for computer programming, a true calling. As a self-taught programmer, he went on to develop software for leading companies prior to a 17-year career at Medco Health Solutions/Express Scripts.

He saw his family as his greatest accomplishment, a proud and dedicated father to his daughter Anne along with her husband Robert Martoglio and cherished granddaughters Mikaela and Claire.

Arkadi had a love for the water, as a young family many summers were spent boating on the Long Island Sound prior to moving to Hawthorne in 2000. His free spirit and desire to explore the world led him on many adventures with Julia by his side. From road trips across Europe, RVing in Alaska and most recently becoming a licensed Capitan to take his friends on an incredible trip in Abaco Bahamas, he lived life to the fullest.

A memorial visitation will be held on Wednesday, January 12th from 5-7pm Garrett Jones Memorial (Shook Farmer Funeral Home), 45 Roseland Ave., Roseland, NJ. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the John Theurer Cancer Center.

A celebration of his life will be held in May, details to follow.
