Obituary for Caryl A. Bergen (Dwyer)

Caryl A. Bergen (Dwyer), 92, of Roseland, NJ, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her loving family on December 26, 2021.

Caryl was born in Brooklyn, NY to John J. and Grace A. Dwyer. She attended St. Joseph’s College and Hofstra University where she received her Master’s degree in Education. Caryl seemed destined to live in NY, but she eventually met the love of her life, Joseph S. Bergen, Sr, and moved with him to NJ. Caryl and Joe eventually settled down in Roseland in July of 1968 where they raised their family.

Caryl was a member of the Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament parish for over 50 years, where she volunteered as a CCD teacher, a CCD principal and a Eucharistic Minister. She truly loved her parish and established many strong and close friendships over the years. One of her favorite pastimes was spending time with her close friends the Ya Yas. Be it aerobics, coffee, lunch, or dinner they always had many laughs and good times together.

Along with being a natural teacher, Caryl also had a passion for interior design. Once her boys had grown, Caryl pursued a career in interior design. She enjoyed helping people affordably decorate their homes.

Caryl was predeceased by her husband of 58 years, Joseph S. Bergen, Sr; her sons Stephen and Thomas; her brother and sister-in-law Jack and Jackie Dwyer; and her sister and brother-in-law Jeanne and Frank McPike. She is survived by her sons Joseph (Joe), William (Bill), and John; her daughter-in-law Dorothy (Dot) and her grandchildren Dylan and Sean; also surviving are many nieces, nephews, cousins, extended relatives, and friends.

Caryl will be sorely missed by all. The family is planning to have a Celebration of Life service for Caryl sometime in the Spring of 2022.

In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in her memory to the American Macular Degeneration Foundation (https://www.macular.org/).
