Obituary for Jean A. Harris (Smith)

Jean Althea Harris passed away peacefully on April 22, 2022, at her home in Livingston, NJ, at the age of 96. Her beloved husband Clifford Earl Harris pre-deceased Jean in 2016. Born in Belleville, NJ, Jean’s parents were Russell and Alice Smith. Jean was a life long resident of New Jersey, and lived in Livingston since 1968 with her husband Clifford. Jean was the last surviving child of Russell and Alice Smith. Jean’s siblings, Elwood, Nancy, George, William and Russell, pre-deceased her. Although Jean and Clifford had no children of their own, they had numerous relatives, some who have passed on, and many loving and extended relatives who have survived them. Most of the surviving relatives live in New Jersey, others are in Texas and California. Jean and Clifford were very social and had a great deal of friends, some they knew from childhood. Prior to her retirement, Jean was a supervisor at Bell Labs in Montclair, NJ. Family and friends were very important to Jean. A very cheerful person, she was adored by family and friends, and spending time with them was what made Jean the happiest.
Along with her husband Clifford, Jean traveled a great deal throughout the United States. They made numerous trips to California, Texas, Arizona, the New England states, among other places, where they had relatives and friends. In her younger years, Jean vacationed in Florida almost every year. Most of her life, however, she spent time in her beloved state of New Jersey. Jean was involved in a number of organizations, mainly in the Livingston area. She was the life of the party, adored by all who knew her, and Jean lived life to the fullest. But, her greatest passion was her love of animals. During her childhood, there were always animals in the Smith household. Dogs, cats, parrots, other animals, most of them strays or castoffs. Jean’s childhood passion for animals continued throughout her life. To this day, Jean is survived by her two beloved cats, Skipper and Little Gray. Jean Althea Harris lived a long and happy life, and she will be missed.

Funeral Services were held privately under the direction of Shook-Farmer Funeral Home, Roseland, NJ, shookfarmer.com.
