Obituary for Joseph Silvia

Joseph M. Silvia, 78, of Roseland, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on February 20, 2022.

Loving Husband, Father, and Grandfather, Joe was Born in Jersey City. He grew up in Hoboken, lived in Kearny, moved to Plainfield, and then settled in Roseland in 1977. He was a reservist in the United States Army during wartime. Prior to his retirement, he was employed as a truck driver with Reitman Industries for 37 years. During this time, he served as the shop steward for Teamsters Union Local 863.

Joe was an Emergency Medical Technician and spent most of his spare time as a member for the Roseland Volunteer First Aid Squad. He served the community for 35 years. Throughout this time, he served in many capacities including those of Captain and Coordinator. Joe served as Coordinator for a total of 20 years. He had a true passion for helping the residents of Roseland. He answered approximately 5,000 calls for help from those in need in Roseland and surrounding towns during his time on the first aid squad.

Additionally, he was instrumental in the procurement of vital supplies, that were directly provided to 9/11 rescuers in New York City. The Roseland Police Department considered Joe a hero for being on the front lines with their officers during Covid-19 while answering calls to render aid to the residents of Roseland.

Joe was always so proud of his beloved wife and two sons for achieving their Lifetime Membership status with the first aid squad.

Innately, he was a teacher and leader. This was exemplified during his career as well as his time with the first aid squad. Above all, he cherished the time he spent with his family. He enjoyed teaching his sons and grandchildren the art of crabbing on the Barnegat Bay at Long Beach Island and enjoyed family vacations there.

Joe is pre-deceased by his parents, Joaquin and Georgianna Silvia and his siblings, Helen Silvia, James Silvia, Georgianna Ronchi, and Florence Wilson.
Surviving is his beloved wife of 54 years, Phyllis E. Silvia (Edwards), son John J. Silvia and his fiancée Jennifer Noble, son Brian J.
