Obituary for William L. Smart Jr.

William L. Smart, Jr. 89, of Roseland, NJ, passed away on December 30, 2021.

A graveside service will be offered on Tuesday, January 4, 2022 at noon at Prospect Hill Cemetery, Caldwell, NJ. Funeral Services are entrusted to Shook-Farmer Funeral Home, Roseland, NJ shookfarmer.com.

Born and raised in Newark, he lived in Pompton Plains for some time and settled in Roseland in 1962. During the Korean War, he honorably served in the US Navy aboard the USS Jeffers. For most of his work life, he was an insurance adjuster and marketing rep, before retiring from Harleysville Insurance Company after 40 years of employment. Bill was a member of Calvary Evangelical Free Church in Essex Fells, becoming a choir member before serving on the board. When his children were young, he was involved with the Roseland Little League Baseball teams, serving as coach and manager for all three of his sons. As the children got older, Bill and Lorraine enjoyed to travel and visited many countries. In his spare time, he was an avid bowler and was a member of several local bowling leagues. Upon his retirement, Bill mostly enjoyed his time with family and his beloved dog Marcus at the Jersey Shore in Avalon, NJ… boating, fishing and the occasional trip to Atlantic City.

Pre-deceased by his wife, Lorraine A. Smart, his daughter, Lori Smart, and his brother, Thomas Smart.
Surviving are his beloved children, William P. Smart and his wife Jacki, Stephen Smart, Edward James Smart and his wife Eveline, and Amy Skala and her husband Pete; loving grandchildren, Matthew, Robert, Brian, Heather, Dylan, Gabriella, Ashley, and Bob; cherished great-grandchildren, Emersyn, Lucas, Lori Rose, Maddy, Colin, Parker, Brayden, Sadie, Paisley, Lucy, and Rylie.
